MG MGB Technical - thermostat housing studs[removal]
How do you remove rusted-in thermostat housing studs, I have managed to remove one but the other two are really stuck. |

Soak with a good penetrating oil over night then use 2 nuts, the top one acts as a jam nut so you undo using the bottom one. |

Hey, Great advice. |

And if need be, add heat with a torch. Charley |

JE - A trick that I learned that works quite well is to heat the stud/head area as hot as you can get it with a torch, then touch the junction with candle wax (I use the little birthday cake candles for this) until you have a puddle of wax around the stud then let the area cool a bit. The hot wax seems to be pulled down along the threads as the area cools and the double nut routine can then be used to back the studs out. Cheers - Dave |

The wax is a little known trick that works so well you won't belive it. RIC |

Dave- Yep, an 'ol timey mechanic's trick that still works when those new-fangled penetrating oils fail. |

There is a good chance that the double nut trick will just rip the threads. Buy a good quality camlock stud remover (the more you pay for it, the cheaper it is as it will last a lifetime) and then use any other tricks advised. Geoff F. |

Thanks everyone for your advice, job now done with the two nut trick. |

When you put the new studs in, don't forget to use thread sealant on them. That will stop coolant rising up the threads and causing corrosion in the future. |

Wax??? I learn something new everyday. Cant wait to try that myself! |

Will get those candles on my next birthday for future use. Thanks for the trick. |
